UNICA DATA ITALIANA

THE LAST POETS “Special Project” [USA]

40th anniversary !!! The group that they now call the godfathers of hip-hop have stamped their own indelible mark on the history of modern music and the spoken word movement, in producing an urban poetry, that is forever socially conscious and sure; a voice of Black nationalism and the marginalised in ’60s & ’70s America, and witness to an unjust violence that has today only been globalised. Like a solitary light in the infinite dark, The Last Poets continue to shine with truth, and a sound which grooves mercilessly. Charismatic poets Umar Bin Hassan & Abiodun Oyewole and master percussionist Babatunde will be accompanied on stage by Robert Irving III (Hammond B3), ex. long-time collaborator of Miles Davis, the effervescent Jamaaladeen Tacuma (bass), who had himself seduced Ornette Coleman with his inimitable sound during the ’70s before pursuing a solo career, and, Ronald Shannon Jackson (drums), Albert Ayler’s percussionist of choice.

DAVID MURRAY BLACK SAINT QUARTET [USA]

Black Saint. This is the name of a record label which straight away brings to mind the musicians which it features. The leading lights of Great Black Music recorded their music for posterity on this Italian label, whose studios were in Milan. From the end of the ‘70s to the beginning of the ‘90s, David Murray recorded seventeen albums for the Italian label, which brought him a certain degree of fame, with the World Saxophone Quartet, the group to which he has remained attached, body and soul, but also with Randy Weston, Dave Burell, Lawrence “Butch” Morris, Olu Dara, Anthony Davis, Craig Harris, John Hicks, James “Blood” Ulmer, Don Pullen, Steve Coleman and many others… This is why the saxophonist has decided to revive the Black Saint Quartet, which has already existed for more than twenty years, both for live performances and on records, with a new approach which revisits the numbers that were first performed for this label but also features new compositions.

    MAGIC MALIK ORCHESTRA [France]

Magic Malik is a precious musician whose name is known by few, yet most people have already caught a strain of his music and a glimpse of his silhouette, always topped off by a woolly hat and prolonged by a flute… Born in 1969 in Abidjan, Ivory Coast and started playing the recorder at the music school in Pointe à Pitre, West Indies. Whether on Saint Germain’s album ‘Boulevard’, peopled with house pulsations and urban sounds, or in the stateless Julien Lourau’s Groove Gang, or in a Jamaica-on-Seine version with Human Spirit, Malik has always known how to give meaning to encounters and to embody his instrument with humanity and elegance. At thirty-two years old this exceptional musician has at last given us an album made entirely by himself, in his own image. Amongst today’s few jazz flute players, Magic Malik brings an irresistible warmth, the result of interesting and varied experiences.

He is one of the new generation of South African musicians who are taking a fresh look at South Africa’s jazz and traditional music heritage. Zim made his mark at the historic inauguration of President Nelson Mandela in 1994, where he directed the 100 person “Drums for Peace Orchestra”, led an elite group of 12 Presidential drummers and featured as a solo saxophonist.

    TONY ALLEN [Nigeria]

drummer and unofficial music director of the late Fela Kuti’s band, Africa 70, helped create the sound of Afrobeat. With his solo recordings Tony has refused to remain still, incorporating dub and avant-garde hip-hop influences into his modern African dance music. He is a self-taught musician whose genius not only brought the world the Afrobeat rhythm, but also through a crucial cultural mechanism, promoted African consciousness.
